Rafael Nel will not be leaving Alvalade when the transfer window reopens in January. Despite seeing limited game time in the early stages of the season, a potential loan move is currently off the table. The Sporting hierarchy and coaching staff believe the 21-year-old forward has what it takes to be a valuable asset across a long and demanding campaign.

Furthermore, Sporting's stance ahead of the winter window, A BOLA has learned, will only shift under two very specific scenarios: an irresistible offer for a permanent transfer, or a loan project that guarantees top-level minutes to aid his technical development and competitive maturity.

With Suárez and Ioannidis leading Rui Borges' attacking options, the young striker's opportunities to immediately establish himself have been limited. So far, Nel has clocked just 15 minutes of senior action, coming in the 3-1 matchday three victory over Alverca. That limited playing time does not, however, reflect the positive impression he made during pre-season. To compensate for the lack of first-team minutes, Sporting's plan has been to keep him match-sharp. The Portugal Under-21 international has featured regularly for the B team, making an immediate impact with two goals in just three appearances. This game time is primarily aimed at keeping the striker ready whenever called upon by Rui Borges in the senior side, having also been named on the bench for the last four fixtures.

RUI BORGES IMPRESSED

The Sporting boss is a keen admirer of the academy graduate's qualities, with the number 9 having developed at the club since the 2020/21 season. Rui Borges has been particularly impressed by Nel's steady progression over the past 18 months, valuing his work rate, penalty-box presence, and tactical discipline. The forward's call-up to the Portugal Under-21 squad serves as further proof of his burgeoning potential.

Tied down to a contract running until 2029 with a €60 million release clause, Rafael Nel remains central to Sporting's project for both the present and the future. The message is clear: while his current role demands patience and rotation, the club firmly believes the young forward will play a pivotal part in their attacking future.
