Spain, finalists in the 2026 World Cup, have not trailed at any point in their seven matches played in the tournament so far.
“La Furia Roja” secured victories against Saudi Arabia (4-0), Uruguay (1-0), Austria (3-0), Portugal (1-0), Belgium (2-1), and France (2-0), consistently taking the lead first. Their only draw was a goalless affair against Cape Verde. This means that if Spain scores first tonight and defeats Argentina, they will become only the third team to win the World Cup without ever falling behind in a single match throughout the tournament. This rare feat has only been achieved twice by Italy (in 1938 and 1982) and once by Germany (in 1990).
Furthermore, in six of the last seven World Cup finals, the trophy has gone to the team that scored the opening goal. The sole exception was the 2006 World Cup, where France took an early lead against Italy but conceded an equalizer, resulting in a 1-1 draw before ultimately losing in a penalty shootout.
