Sony Music kicks off operations in Lagos

Sony Music Entertainment is set to extend its business operations to Nigeria.

The music corporation has already set up office in Lagos. This workstation will serve as a bureau for its West African operations. Music business entrepreneur Michael Ugwu has been named as the General Manager for the West African region.

This news comes following Nigerian pop star Davido recent publishing deal with Sony Music Global.

The international music and entertainment company also plans to partner with other African artists.

"We are really keen to partner with African artists to deliver local, African and global success stories. With over 800 million people living in Sub Saharan Africa, the African continent is a market with huge potential for local artists wanting to expand their horizons," said Sean Watson, Managing Director of Sony Music Entertainment Africa in a statement.

As part of it’s strategy to establish it’s presence in Africa, Sony Music is also working up on setting up a camp in Kenya to cater to its operations in East Africa.

The company already has business operations in Johannesburg and Cape Town in South Africa. Its operational expansions on the continent fall in line with its long-term plan to commence operations in Africa.

"Expansion in Africa has been part of our strategy for several years," said Adam Granite, President, Northern & Eastern Europe and Africa, Sony Music International.

"As the region continues to grow, we see significant opportunities to market the incredible local talent in Africa to the rest of the world as well as import our repertoire and exploit it on emerging digital platforms."

The new West African General manager Ugwu was a music entrepreneur before being appointed this post. He was once the CEO of iROKING which is the sister company of iROKOtv.
