The Philadelphia 76ers have been dealt a significant blow as their star player, Joel Embiid, underwent emergency surgery in Houston for acute appendicitis.

The Cameroonian center experienced severe discomfort in the early hours of Thursday. Head coach Nick Nurse revealed that Embiid contacted the team staff around 3:00-3:30 AM, reporting that he wasn't feeling well. Just a few hours later, following necessary examinations, it was determined that immediate surgery was required. The procedure was successfully performed in Houston.

“They took him to the doctor, tests were done, and it was decided he needed surgery here in Houston,” Nurse stated, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation. He also admitted that this is “a big blow” for the team, especially at this critical juncture of the season.

Embiid's absence comes at a time when the 76ers are battling for the best possible seeding in the Eastern Conference. With no clear timetable for his return, it appears unlikely that the former MVP will be back for the play-in tournament or even the first round of the playoffs. Nurse stressed that the team must adapt quickly:

“We've played without him at other times this year. We have solutions, like Andre Drummond and Adem Bona, and we need to find our rhythm again.”

Embiid, who is averaging 26.9 points and 7.7 rebounds this season, has been heavily plagued by injuries, limiting him to just 38 appearances. In recent days, he had publicly expressed his dissatisfaction with management and Daryl Morey regarding the handling of his playing time. Now, Philadelphia must navigate without its leader during one of the most crucial periods of the year, with Nurse himself rallying the troops: “We have to pick ourselves up and keep going.”
