Since Losing to Zvezda, Fenerbahçe Can't Catch a Break: Real Celebrates in Istanbul, Primed for Red Star Clash
Fenerbahçe held a dominant position in the EuroLeague for an extended period, sitting atop the standings. However, since mid-March, they've plunged into a deep slump, struggling to find their footing. Since their March 13th loss to Crvena Zvezda in Belgrade, Fener has played seven EuroLeague games, securing only one victory against Olimpia Milan. Their latest setback came tonight as Real Madrid outplayed them in Istanbul, clinching a 74-69 win. This defeat has sent Fener tumbling to fourth place.
Fener delivered a poor first-half performance, trailing by six points at halftime. Yet, in the third quarter, they outscored Real by a significant 10 points, seemingly rectifying the damage. It appeared Sarunas Jasikevicius's squad had navigated the critical phase of the game, overcome their struggles, and were finally poised to break their losing streak.
However, the final quarter brought a complete collapse. Real tightened their defense, limiting Fener to a meager 11 points. Fueled by stellar performances from Trey Lyles, Facundo Campazzo, and Mario Hezonja, Real orchestrated a comeback victory, pushing Fener down to fourth place.
Facundo Campazzo led Real to victory with 15 points. Lyles scored all 12 of his points in the final quarter, a tally matched by Edy Tavares. For Fener, Brandon Boston was the top scorer with 21 points.
With this win, the Madrid side leapfrogged Fener, now sitting in third place with a 23-14 record. Fener holds the same record but is positioned just below them.
Despite a loss to Olympiacos in the previous round, Real's triumph over Fener has healed their wounds ahead of the final EuroLeague round on April 16th, where they will host Crvena Zvezda.
