South African international Jayden Adams has passed away just weeks after participating in the World Cup, according to local media reports. The Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder died at the age of 25. He started in his country's first two matches at the 2026 World Cup. Adams, who earned nine caps for the national team, had shared a photo with his girlfriend online less than a day before news of his death was announced. His partner, Aquila, posted a picture of them together on Friday. His shocking death has sent ripples through the football world.
The South African Football Players' Union (SAFPU) released a statement: "SAFPU is devastated by the untimely passing of Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder, Jayden Adams. Jayden recently represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, carrying the nation's hopes with pride, courage, and dignity. His passing is an immeasurable loss to his family, teammates, clubs, the football community, and the country as a whole. We extend our deepest condolences to the Adams family, Mamelodi Sundowns, Stellenbosch, Bafana Bafana, and all whose lives he touched. South African football has lost a talented player, a proud servant of the game, and a young life that had so much more to offer. May his soul rest in eternal peace."
Adams moved to Pretoria-based Mamelodi from his hometown club Stellenbosch last summer. He made his debut for South Africa in 2024 but was not included in the squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. At the World Cup, Adams played an hour in the 2-0 loss to Mexico at the Estadio Azteca in the opening match. He was substituted at halftime in the second game, a 1-1 draw with the Czech Republic. Adams came on as a substitute late in the narrow victory over South Korea, which secured the team's progression to the knockout stages. However, he did not feature in the match where co-hosts Canada eliminated South Africa. That game was played on June 28, less than two weeks before his death.
