According to well-informed insider Shams Charania, Kawhi Leonard's trade from the Los Angeles Clippers to the Toronto Raptors has been blocked by the NBA league office.
The reason for the trade being put on hold is that the California-based franchise is under investigation for allegations of making under-the-table payments to Leonard through the company "Aspiration."
As a result, the trade has not yet been finalized. The conditions for its approval will only be met once the NBA reaches a verdict in the case against the Clippers.
In response to the situation, the Los Angeles team issued a statement, which we are providing in its entirety.
Over the past 10 months, our organization has fully cooperated with the NBA's investigation, participating in dozens of interviews, submitting tens of thousands of documents, and making our personnel available. While the process has been challenging, we have remained committed to transparency. On June 30, we reached an agreement in principle on a trade for Kawhi Leonard to the Toronto Raptors. We have since been advised that the trade can only be finalized if the Raptors' ownership group assumes the risk of penalties related to Kawhi's contract, which could theoretically arise from the ongoing investigation. The investigation is still pending, and we expect the trade to be finalized upon its conclusion. At the center of this investigation are Joe Sanberg and the company "Aspiration." We did not funnel money to Kawhi Leonard through "Aspiration." Like many experienced investors, financial institutions, and business partners, we were victims of a fraud initiated by Sanberg, who has since been convicted and sentenced to 14 years in prison. We are aware of the uncertainty this situation has created, as well as the impact it has had on our team, our fans, the Raptors organization, their fans, and the players whose futures remain affected as this process continues. We remain confident that once the facts are fairly and thoroughly evaluated, the NBA will confirm exactly what we have been saying from the beginning: We did not do what we are accused of.
It remains to be seen how this complicated situation will unfold, but it would be a real shame for Darko Rajaković to miss out on such a significant addition, which would bring a completely new dimension to the Raptors and make them far more competitive.
