Sensation in Spain: The "King" is Dead! Yebo, Mills, and 43-year-old Huertas Knock Out Real

Real Madrid basketball players ended their season without a single trophy, as they were defeated by Tenerife 107:95 in the decisive quarter-final playoff game of the Spanish ACB League. The team from the Canary Islands thus pulled off a major upset, eliminating the Madrilenians in the first round of the playoffs for the first time in 18 years.

The team that finished the league phase in first place failed to live up to their favorites tag against the eighth-seeded squad, meaning they will miss out on a championship trophy after two consecutive titles.

Tenerife demonstrated early in the first half at the WiZink Center that they wouldn't be playing a supporting role. Experienced Thomas Durnekamp and 43-year-old Marcelinho Huertas consistently hit from long range, allowing the visitors to take a 49:45 lead into halftime.

Sergio Scariolo's team responded in the third quarter, managing to turn the score around and holding a three-point advantage (73:70) heading into the final ten minutes. However, a complete turnaround followed. Tenerife dominated the closing stages, led by the in-form Patty Mills and Kevin Yebo, who, alongside Huertas, proved an unsolvable puzzle for the home side.

Patty Mills was the most efficient player for the winning team with 29 points, while Marcelinho Huertas added 23. Kevin Yebo finished the game with 22 points. On the opposing side, Mario Hezonja was the only one performing at an expected level, scoring 22 points.

The reigning European vice-champions thus lost their chance to win a third consecutive Spanish league title, while coach Txus Vidorreta's team secured a spot in the semi-finals.
