Departing South Sydney Rabbitohs star Sam Burgess expects to be out for six to eight weeks after surgery on his fractured cheekbone.

Burgess is due to link up with English rugby union side Bath in the coming weeks after agreeing a switch in codes back in February.

However, the 25-year-old's debut for his new club is set to be delayed as a result of the injury he sustained at the beginning of an inspirational performance in Sunday's NRL grand final.

Burgess was involved in a sickening clash of heads with fellow England international James Graham in the opening minute, but went on to play a leading role as the Rabbitohs defeated Canterbury Bulldogs 30-6 to claim their first premiership in 43 years.

He is now poised to undergo surgery on Tuesday and anticipates a lay-off of up to two months.

Speaking at Redfern Oval on Monday as Souths basked in the glory of their victory, Burgess told Fox Sports: "It [the injury] is not too bad. I get it fixed tomorrow - it will be six to eight weeks."
