Wayne Rooney has admitted he would only consider a return to management if an offer came from two of his former clubs: Everton or Manchester United.
The 40-year-old former striker, now working as a pundit, most recently managed Plymouth, from which he was sacked at the end of 2024. The former England captain won every possible trophy with the 'Red Devils' but has been far less successful in his coaching career, which included stints at Derby County, D.C. United, and Birmingham City.
When asked if he would return to coaching after nearly a two-year absence, Rooney responded: “I doubt it. I know I took on four difficult jobs in my previous roles. The only way I would return to any similar position is with Everton or Manchester United, but that’s highly unlikely. Which offer would I prefer? Whichever came first.
It’s possible I might never coach again. I think as a player, you sense when your career is nearing its end and you can prepare for it. However, with coaching, you never know if you’ll stay in a role for a year, two, ten, or just three months.”
