Romero Reveals Simeone's Message and Comments on Alvarez's Situation at Atlético Unveiling
Atlético Madrid's new signing, Cristian Romero, has been officially unveiled as a "Rojiblanco" player. The Argentine international, who joined from Tottenham for nearly 40 million euros, will wear the number 21 shirt and demonstrated his ambitions for his new team at the press conference.
"I thank the club president for his words. For some time now, I've been telling my loved ones that I wanted to make this change. This is an important day for us, to arrive at such a big club. A great season lies ahead, and I am ready."
"I've faced Atlético Madrid several times, and you can feel the support of the fans. That's why I can't wait to compete with my teammates, and I hope to live up to expectations. I'm grateful for the effort the club made to sign me, and I will try to repay the trust they've placed in me. I want to leave my mark on the club's history, and the only way to do that is by winning," Romero began.
When asked if he was made for Atlético, the defender replied: "We hope so. I believe that after all the words Julian and Cholo told me... I hope to perform at a high level and etch my name into the history of this great club."
The Argentine was also asked about the situation with his compatriot Julian Alvarez, who wants to leave Atlético, to which he responded: "I see him doing very well. I see him as always – a boy with a desire to keep scoring goals, with a desire to make people happy... I see him very dedicated, and that makes me very happy."
Romero also revealed what Atlético coach Diego Simeone told him: "He asked me to be a leader on the field, to help my teammates. To feel like part of this family. I'll feel comfortable."
Regarding his arrival at Atlético, the footballer added: "This was a challenge that remained in my career. I wanted to play in the three most important leagues in Europe, and I'm close to achieving it. Last season didn't work out due to circumstances, but I'm very excited. I want to prepare myself to be with my teammates soon."
On the ambition to win trophies, the Argentine was emphatic: "Everyone who competes always wants to win. There isn't a player at Atlético who thinks otherwise. We have to take it step by step, but always with a winning mentality. The captain spoke yesterday and conveyed that message from day one. Hopefully, we'll lift a trophy this season."
