Risk of collapse in extreme heat. FIFA under pressure to postpone match immediately

Saturday's World Cup Round of 16 match between France and Paraguay in Philadelphia is likely to be played in the highest temperatures seen at the tournament so far.

A heatwave has struck the eastern and central United States, with the National Weather Service (NWS) forecasting that the heat index could reach between 38 and 46 degrees Celsius (100 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit).

High temperatures are expected to persist overnight, with records potentially being broken in some areas. France already struggled in their Round of 16 match against Sweden in East Rutherford, which kicked off at 5:00 PM local time in temperatures exceeding 32 degrees Celsius (90 degrees Fahrenheit). "Les Bleus" are scheduled to face Paraguay at the same time.

Three-minute cooling breaks have been implemented midway through each half at the tournament, but they have drawn criticism from both sides. Some argue they disrupt the flow of the game, while others claim they are insufficient for properly cooling down the body.

Intense physical activity on a hot day can lead to extreme fatigue, impaired performance, headaches, irritability, nausea, dizziness, cramps, and dehydration—all symptoms of exertional heatstroke. This condition requires immediate medical attention and is the third leading cause of death among athletes.
