Former Formula 1 driver Daniel Ricciardo believes youth and a clear mind are the driving forces behind Andrea Kimi Antonelli's sensational 2026 campaign.

With nine race victories in just his second season in the sport, the Italian Mercedes star is on the brink of his maiden world title. To seal the crown at the upcoming Mexico City Grand Prix, Antonelli needs only a ninth-place finish, or for neither George Russell nor Lewis Hamilton to take the win. In doing so, the 20-year-old sensation would become the youngest world champion in Formula 1 history, shattering Sebastian Vettel's record by more than three years.

Ricciardo, who made his F1 debut at 22 and stepped away from the sport at 35, feels he can relate entirely to the Italian's mindset and the distinct edge it provides.

"A friend asked me about Antonelli recently, and I said that ignorance is a superpower. I mean that strictly in terms of being young, with no disrespect intended," the Australian explained on the Beyond the Grid podcast. "Youth is a massive advantage—being unburdened and not yet having experienced every facet of this world. I remember my first year at Red Bull Racing: you're naive, you're young, you're carefree. Everything clicks effortlessly and you think, 'Wow, I'm winning, this is great, I'm just going to keep winning because I'm the best.'"

Ricciardo earned promotion to Red Bull's senior team for the 2014 season following compatriot Mark Webber's retirement, lining up alongside Sebastian Vettel. The Australian delivered the team's only three wins that year, comprehensively outshining the reigning four-time world champion. The parallel with the current situation is striking, as Antonelli continues to outperform Russell despite the Briton being Mercedes' established frontrunner.

"I don't want to make a direct comparison between him and myself, but the power of youth lies precisely in the ability to handle an environment that is often intensely demanding. Over time, you inevitably carry mental baggage," Ricciardo said. "Right now, Kimi is in the sweet spot—he is undeniably gifted and remarkably fast, but he carries zero weight on his shoulders. He just gets out there and drives without overthinking, and that truly is a superpower."

Ricciardo admitted that maintaining that effortless approach became increasingly difficult throughout his career, ultimately influencing his decision to depart Red Bull after 2018. He noted that over time, questions and doubts naturally creep in, requiring far greater effort to achieve results that once came naturally.

Following his victory at the United States Grand Prix, Antonelli confirmed he intends to maintain the same approach for the remainder of the season, refusing to succumb to the pressure surrounding his impending coronation.

"I'll take the same mindset into it—to have as much fun as possible and fight for another win," the young Italian stated. "My aim is to finish the season in the best possible way and simply enjoy racing right down to the wire."
