Golfer mounts incredible recovery with course record
Rhein Gibson mounted a remarkable recovery with a course record eight-under-par 64 to move into contention at the Australian PGA Championship as David Lingmerth unseated Zander Lombard as leader.
Australian Gibson had started the day seven over, having recorded seven bogeys and one double in his first round, and appeared in for another tough round after starting with back-to-back bogeys on day two.
However, Gibson responded with consecutive birdies and - after dropping a shot at the fifth - made eagle at the par-five ninth before producing a stunning effort on the back nine.
He picked up another shot at the 11th and recorded a second eagle on the 12th, with a run of four birdies in the final five holes then taking Gibson within two shots of new leader Lingmerth.
Lingmerth had been six shots behind overnight leader Lombard following the first day's play at Royal Pines Resort on the Gold Coast.
However, the Swede produced a performance in contrast to Thursday's to inconsistent effort, carding six birdies and just two bogeys to go four under for the round and head the leaderboard with a score of three under.
A group of six players trail Lingmerth by a stroke on two under, including England's Mark Foster and South African Lombard - who dropped off the top with a three-over round of 75.
Lombard's four birdies were cancelled out by the same number of bogeys, but it was a particularly unlucky 13th hole on which he holed a triple that proved pivotal as the 20-year-old surrendered his advantage.
Peter Uihlein, Matthew Millar, Pablo Martin Benavides and Dylan Frittelli are also just a shot adrift, but may be looking over their shoulders following Gibson's incredible turnaround.
