Redknapp Unconvinced by Carrick as Man Utd Boss, but Insists Recruitment Is the Real Issue
Former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has expressed doubts over Michael Carrick's credentials as Manchester United boss, but insists the club's core problem lies in poor recruitment and a lack of squad quality. Redknapp, who has known Carrick since his youth days at West Ham, admitted he was never convinced the former midfielder would transition into management.
"I can't say I ever saw him as a future manager. Michael was always a great lad from a lovely family, a hugely intelligent footballer who understood the game, read it well, and controlled matches. But he has always been quiet and laid-back. That's just his nature," Redknapp commented. He drew a comparison with Roberto De Zerbi, pointing out that Carrick is not the type of manager to wear his heart on his sleeve on the touchline.
Despite his reservations, Redknapp hopes Carrick can turn the situation around and remain in charge. However, he stressed that changing the manager will not resolve Manchester United's fundamental issues. "You could replace Michael tomorrow, but this team still wouldn't finish higher than fifth or sixth this season. That's how I see it. The squad simply isn't good enough to challenge for the title. That's the reality he's dealing with, and it would be the exact same for whoever else they appointed," the former Premier League boss added.
Redknapp also defended Lisandro Martinez, who made headlines with his candid criticism of the club's hierarchy following a 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. Redknapp believes the Argentine defender simply voiced the hard truth about the squad's shortcomings. "The problem is recruitment, recruitment, recruitment. That is where they fall short on quality," Redknapp noted. Manchester United find themselves in a challenging run of form, and an upcoming trip to Leeds poses another stern test for Carrick and his side.
