Nikola Tsolov's career might continue in Japan's Super Formula series, as there appears to be no immediate spot for the 'Bulgarian Lion' on the Formula 1 grid in 2027.
According to The New Zealand Herald, Red Bull was highly impressed with Liam Lawson's performance as a reserve driver for their senior team. Consequently, Red Bull management plans to retain the New Zealander in a full-time seat at Racing Bulls for another season, a move that would effectively come at Tsolov's expense.
Instead, the 'Bulgarian Lion' is expected to be offered a reserve driver role, combined with a full-time drive in Japan's Super Formula. Such a strategy is not new for Red Bull, as they have previously sent both Pierre Gasly and Lawson to the Japanese championship before their F1 debuts. It's entirely possible that Tsolov's program next year could also include extensive testing and participation in free practice sessions, preparing him for a potential Formula 1 seat in 2028.
Super Formula is the premier single-seater championship not only in Japan but across Asia. The cars in the series utilize an identical SF23 chassis, with teams having the choice between Honda and Toyota engines.
