European football's governing body is looking to establish the facts surrounding payments made between 2001 and 2018, during which Barcelona paid €8.4 million to José María Enríquez Negreira, the former vice president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation's Technical Committee of Referees. The investigation seeks to determine the true purpose behind the financial transactions and whether they had any direct impact on refereeing decisions in Spanish football.

"Following today's announcement by UEFA regarding the so-called 'Negreira case', Real Madrid C.F. states the following:

UEFA has confirmed receipt of the complaint submitted by Real Madrid, as well as the continuation of the investigation into payments made over two decades by FC Barcelona to the former vice president of the Technical Committee of Referees.

Our club's submission includes extensive documentation and evidence regarding events of utmost gravity that directly affect the integrity of the competition and public trust in the officiating system.

Real Madrid considers it imperative, now that UEFA has this material at its disposal, that the investigation progresses as swiftly as possible towards a final conclusion, and that the competent bodies take appropriate disciplinary action in line with the severity of the established facts.

Our club will continue to actively cooperate with UEFA and take all necessary steps to achieve full clarity regarding circumstances we deem incompatible with the principles of honesty, transparency, and fair play that must govern European football."
