Real Madrid's management is set to offer a new one-year contract to defender Antonio Rüdiger, according to Spanish newspaper "AS". The player's current deal expires at the end of the season, making him eligible for a free transfer. However, Rüdiger has expressed a strong desire to remain with the Madrid giants. The club views their decision last summer not to offer Luka Modrić a similar extension as a mistake, especially since the Croatian midfielder had clearly stated his wish to stay before eventually moving to AC Milan, where he has been performing exceptionally well.
This decision is also influenced by Real Madrid's significant defensive woes, where Rüdiger is considered one of the most reliable options. With expectations of David Alaba's departure and Éder Militão's persistent injury problems, the club faces a severely depleted backline. Retaining Rüdiger is therefore seen as crucial for maintaining defensive balance. The German international is still considered a primary choice for the central defense, potentially partnering with Dean Huijsen, who is currently recovering from an injury.
