Former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher believes American outfit Cadillac should replace Valtteri Bottas with Esteban Ocon, arguing that the Frenchman would be a far better fit for the team. The German shared his assessment while reflecting on Cadillac's debut campaign in the championship, stressing that his criticism of the Finn is strictly down to on-track performance.
Bottas returned to Formula 1 with Cadillac in 2026 after a one-year hiatus, partnering fellow returning veteran Sergio Perez. Despite boasting plenty of experience across their lineup, the American team has faced significant challenges matching their established rivals in their maiden season.
Schumacher sees Ocon as a better alternative
Speaking on the "Backstage Boxengasse" podcast, Schumacher pinpointed current Haas driver Esteban Ocon as the ideal recruit: "I would definitely bring Ocon in immediately."
The German was quick to clarify that his sporting assessment is not personal, describing Bottas as an extremely likable individual and asking that his comments not be taken to heart.
“From a purely sporting perspective, however, it is a different story,” Schumacher added, advising the Finn “to get on his bike and enjoy life.”
The remark was a clear nod to Bottas's recent cycling trek from Malaysia to Singapore, which he documented on social media. Cycling has become an increasingly central part of his life away from racing, and Schumacher's comments suggest it might be best for him to focus on his off-track passions.
Meanwhile, Ocon is racing for Haas but has yet to secure a confirmed seat for the 2027 season. Unlike Bottas, who spent 2025 off the grid before signing with Cadillac, the Frenchman has competed uninterrupted.
Bottas and Perez's 2026 campaign with Cadillac
When putting together its inaugural driver pairing, Cadillac banked on experience. Bottas brought ten Grand Prix victories from his Mercedes days, while Perez contributed six wins alongside several seasons partnering Max Verstappen at Red Bull.
So far in 2026, however, neither driver has managed to score a point for the team. In its debut season, Cadillac has spent most races at the rear of the field, with both drivers regularly finishing well outside the top ten.
The Finn's best result came at the Chinese Grand Prix with a 13th-place finish, though his campaign has been heavily disrupted by retirements and reliability issues.
Perez has also endured a tough battle in search of points. The Mexican came closest in Monaco, crossing the line in tenth before a ten-second penalty wiped out what would have been his first score of the season.
Despite the lack of points for both, Perez has largely held the upper hand in their intra-team battle, frequently finishing ahead of Bottas. The Mexican has delivered more convincing race weekends overall, even if the car's lack of pace has kept them away from the front of the grid.
