The BET awards have raised a lot of storm and generated a huge amount of controversy. In the US, they picked Kendrick Lamar over J Cole. In Africa, they chose Stonebwoy over Nigeria’s darling Yemi Alade, and in the UK, Fuse ODG lost out to Stormzy.

First, all’s fair with non-voting awards. The honors are appropriated by an undisclosed group of people who sit in communion, go over certain secret metrics, yardsticks, and criteria, before announcing nominees, and later, deciding the awards.

Then there’s the matter of giving awards to non-US artistes backstage, and five hours before the big night. This has raised a number of issues, with Yemi Alade, Wizkid, and Fuse ODG speaking out against it. Many have even called for Africa to boycott the awards.

A glaring 67% of people who participated in the survey went for the nuclear button. Nigerians believe that African stars are being mistreated at the prestigious event, hence they should boycott it without consideration. They simply voted yes to boycott.

All’s not lost for the BET in the public eyes, as a paltry 12% of readers would rather have the BET than nothing. They voted no to boycott, choosing instead to maintain the opinion that African stars should receive the recognition, regardless of the time and place of receiving the award.

And not too surprisingly, 20% of readers just don’t care. BET or not, life goes on right?
