Two weeks ago, Louis Van Gaal’s Manchester United team had just lost two games in a row vs. Sunderland at home in the league and FC Midtjylland (for what it’s worth I had to google the actual spelling so as not to call them FC Midget Land) in the Europa League.
Yes Manchester United played those games without Star Forward Wayne Rooney and a host of other First team members. But this was against a club fighting relegation in the EPL and another formed in 1999, surely LVG couldn’t be saved now.
To quote Man Utd legend and football analyst Paul Scholes, “The fans look bored, the players look bored, and when you look at the bench, LVG looks bored too”.
But the games that have followed have been something else for the Red Devils. First came the FA Cup game at Shrewsbury Town where a Juan Mata inspired MUFC blitzed through in an attacking way reminiscent of the Manchester United of old, and then the return leg in the Europa League (vs. FC Midget Land).
Seeing the lineup on my screen and hearing that Anthony Martial who initially was the starting Striker got injured in the warm up and Utd were to start with an 18 yr old lad named Marcus Rashford (infact, prior to the game, he had less than five games under his belt for the U-21s, that’s how inexperienced he was)
After conceding first in the game, I went on Twitter to rant and was shocked lots of people were actually following a Thursday Night game, even though it was just to banter. Memphis who had been outstanding in the ongoing loss, forced an equalizer via an Own Goal and then towards the end of the half, Juan Mata missed a penalty. Oh that was when I knew The Force was no longer with ManU.
LVG seeing as he was likely going to be fired if Midget Land dumped UTD out of Europe opted to give the players more freedom and instructed young Marcus Rashford to be focused on being in the opposition’s penalty box. Then came the moment no UTD fan will forget in a hurry.
We all know how it ended, United delivered a 2nd half masterpiece, UTD won 5-1. A star was born, blah blah.. I was busy remembering Federico Macheda.
United fans were going overboard and happy they won FC MIdtjylland 5-1 at Old Trafford in a Europa League Game (which goes to show how much the mighty have fallen), detractors were quick to point out it was only against Shrewsbury and a Wifi Password team, the real test was to come on Sunday, when Man Utd will face premier league favorites Arsenal.
Personally, I subscribe to YouTube Channels such as Cheeky Sport, FullTime Devils and also watch opposition fan cams before games. The mood I was getting from UTD supporters was downright sad and embarrassing. We were ready to be beaten by Arsenal at O.T. in the league. Robbie and Moh (from ArsenalFanTv) on the other hand after seeing the UTD lineup were so sure it was Christmas – what a time to play United – Thierry Henry was so happy to analyze on Sky, Ray Parlour and Kanu Nwankwo were so happy to tweet. I saw tweets like we played you with teenagers and lost 8-2, let’s see how you fare with yours.
Not to bore you with how that boring game went, instead of watching Manchester United fan cams on youtube, I headed straight for Arsenal Fan Tv on YouTube and Piers Morgan’s twitter page to see the meltdown – Oh and it was a-plenty.
United kids had done it against a team of full Internationals. Even though I knew and had heard of everyone that played for Man U that day (because I try my best to follow the U-21s), I actually saw them play and was impressed that day.
Marcus Rashford did it against Cech (one of the top 5 GKs in the world).
LVG who normally never stands, came down to the technical area and gave us a show, although he was still clutching onto his notepad on the floor.
LVG managed to make us happy and all #LVGOUT swapped to #WengerOut In the space of 3 games.
(as at time of writing this, ManUtd just won again vs Watford, while Arsenal lost at home to Swansea).
LVG has definitely bought himself time till the end of the season, but has he done enough to stay on till next season???
