Timi Blaze has a collection of covers on 'The Genius Mixtape
Well, as mixtapes go, this is the cover special, where rap comes in fierce and a new direction was pursued and gotten.
Timi Blaze, exceptional rapper, takes on the best of popular songs and put a spin on them. He infuses his creativity into the tracks, and possesses them as much, making them improved and local versions of it.
Justin Bieber’s ‘Love yourself’ becomes the comical, and ultimately perverse ‘Knack yourself’. He channels his thanksgiving spirit on Wizkid’s smash hit ‘Ojuelegba’, sharing stories on his struggles so far and the growth experienced. Tory Lanez’s ‘Say it’ get is revamped for something soft and piercing, as Timi empties his heart to his love interest. He finds space to cover ‘Panda’ with braggadocio as his fuel, and ‘other rappers’, his victims. Ycee’s ‘Jagaban’ still took out of this copy book, only with more fierceness.
An original track is shoved in as a reminder that originality still resides in this house. But it fails to stand out, as ‘Same swag’ comes off as a cover of something distant, but popular.
Timi’s mixtape of rap covers are just a showcase of his talent, layering his rap over popular tunes, to encourage listenership, and penetrate more hearts. There are no big surprises, no huge statement of intent, or quotables to max out your brain capacity. This is a collection of covers, that’s all.
