PSG Set to Play During Ballon d'Or Ceremony Again Following Postponement of Lyon Clash

The Paris Police Prefecture has decided to postpone the Ligue 1 Round 8 clash between Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique Lyonnais due to anticipated mass demonstrations across France. Originally scheduled for Sunday, October 25, at the Parc des Princes, the marquee fixture will now take place on Monday, October 26, at 20:30 CET.

France is bracing for another wave of unrest. Just a week after the October 17 marches brought hundreds of thousands onto the streets nationwide, a second major protest has been called for Saturday, October 24, with another large turnout anticipated. Security measures will be significantly tightened following riots and acts of vandalism in several major cities that marred otherwise peaceful demonstrations last weekend. According to Minister Delegate to the Ministry of the Interior Jean-Didier Berger, security personnel deployment will be increased by 20 percent.

This requires mobilizing a vast number of law enforcement officers, particularly in the capital. As a result, authorities stepped in to call off Sunday night's 20:45 clash between PSG and Lyon. Although the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) opposed altering the schedule, police authorities enforced their decision.

"The LFP takes note of the Police Prefecture's order prohibiting the Ligue 1 McDonald's Round 8 match between Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique Lyonnais on Sunday, October 25, at 20:45, and has decided, in consultation with 'Ligue 1+', to reschedule the fixture for Monday, October 26, at 20:30," read the league's official statement.

Ironically, the new kick-off time directly clashes with the star-studded 2026 Ballon d'Or ceremony in London. The timing is particularly inconvenient as several key PSG figures—including Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Ousmane Dembélé, and Vitinha—are among the contenders for the prestigious accolade. A remarkably similar situation played out last season, when torrential rain in the Bouches-du-Rhône department forced the postponement of Marseille vs. PSG (1-0). That match was played at the Stade Vélodrome precisely during the 2025 gala, where Dembélé ultimately scooped the coveted award.
