Premier League finally issues official statement on Manchester City verdict with key clarifications
On Friday, the English media broke the long-awaited news that had been years in the making: following an extensive process, an independent commission reached a verdict regarding Manchester City's financial breaches between 2009 and 2018. The Athletic revealed that the independent panel found the club guilty of 114 of the 115 primary charges. Surprisingly, while the football world was reacting to the news and its potential fallout, the Premier League refrained from confirming the reports. That official confirmation has only now arrived.
In an official statement, the Premier League confirmed that the independent commission found Manchester City guilty of all charges relating to serious breaches of league financial rules across nine seasons, as well as the majority of charges regarding a failure to cooperate with the investigation. The league clarified that the club has the right to appeal the findings and has until Friday, October 2, to do so. The Etihad hierarchy has already signaled its intention to appeal, with a further official club statement expected shortly.
The Premier League board intends for the entire process—including any appeals and the publication of the respective verdicts—to be concluded as swiftly as possible.
