Several Premier League clubs cannot afford to vote in favour of expelling Manchester City from the top flight, as doing so could trigger a "commercial disaster". For such an extreme sanction to take effect and see the champions kicked out of the Premier League, at least 15 of the 20 member clubs must back the motion. According to Sky Sports, two senior executives from leading clubs have admitted they would be astonished if 15 clubs were to support such a punishment.
The rationale is that many rivals view Manchester City as an integral part of the Premier League's commercial appeal, both domestically and across the globe.
"If Manchester City were to be expelled, the commercial ramifications would be massive for everyone in the league and it would ultimately cost the remaining clubs a huge amount of money," an unnamed executive told Sky Sports. They explained that if such a decision were implemented during the current or following season, only 19 clubs would contest the remaining fixtures. Broadcasters in the UK and overseas would likely demand rebates due to the reduced schedule and the diminished marquee value of the matches they paid to air. Sponsorship and corporate revenue streams could also plummet if the most dominant force in modern English football were removed from the division.
Furthermore, such a scenario would cast major doubt over the Premier League futures of world-class superstars like Erling Haaland, further undermining the competition's commercial standing.
