Dimitar Berbatov, the former Premier League top scorer, started for the Red Devils and played the full match. He hit the post early on and missed a penalty in the second half, but still drew applause for his signature elegant touches, one of which set up his team's final goal.

The hosts initially took the lead through Lee Barnard. United equalized with a well-struck shot from Phil Bardsley, ending the first half level. Early in the second half, Fraser Campbell completed the turnaround after a mistake by the home goalkeeper, scoring from close range. Shortly after, he added a third goal, receiving a pass from Valencia and firing home as the Southampton keeper again reacted poorly. Berbatov then earned a penalty, but his weak shot was saved by Forecast. Barnard pulled one back for Southampton, making it 3-3 from close range after receiving a pass from Rickie Lambert. Danny Webber and Phil Bardsley then sealed the final score. Webber tapped into an empty net after a good run by Campbell. For the final goal, Berbatov showcased his exceptional technique near the touchline before brilliantly setting up Webber, who then found Bardsley. Bardsley exchanged passes with Gibson and struck to make it 3-5.
