Cristiano Ronaldo and the entire Portugal squad paid an emotional tribute to their former teammate Diogo Jota after securing a 2-1 victory over Croatia at the World Cup in Toronto on Thursday. Following the final whistle, Ronaldo, who scored Portugal's opening goal from a penalty in the Round of 16 clash, donned Jota's number 21 jersey. With tears in his eyes, he pointed skyward as he gathered with his teammates at the center of the pitch.

Friday marks exactly one year since the tragic deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva in a car accident in Western Spain. The forward earned 49 caps for the Portuguese national team, scoring 14 goals.

"We knew it before the match, it was such a special moment," Ronaldo stated. "Today, in the team, we talked about life's coincidences; it's incredible. I was amazed because today's situation means a lot to us, not just because we won the game, but because of how we did it. We know he is with us, and the only logical thing was to win today to honor him in the best possible way," Ronaldo commented on the occasion.

In the Round of 16, Portugal is set to face Spain on Monday in Arlington, Texas.
