Players Pushed to the Brink as La Liga Chief Warns: Breaking Point Is Coming
Tebas singled out the expansion of the World Cup and the Club World Cup in particular. "Some players are still managing to cope, more or less, but a breaking point is inevitable. It is relentless. Instead of reducing the workload, we are increasing it. If we don't address this, football will suffer," he stated at a player performance and health conference in London.
The head of the Spanish top flight also took aim at how governing bodies engage with domestic leagues and players: "They grant you an audience, listen to your grievances, and then proceed to do whatever they want. This model has to change." His sentiments were echoed by Maheta Molango, chief executive of the English Professional Footballers' Association (PFA).
Molango pointed to the five players forced to withdraw from the England squad due to fitness issues during the current international window. He went so far as to call Chelsea's Cole Palmer a "victim of the calendar", even though the 24-year-old attacking midfielder was not involved in the summer tournament in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
"This should serve as a clear wake-up call. For those who think this is merely an English issue, look at Kai Havertz, Brian Brobbey, or Kylian Mbappé—all of whom sustained injuries last week—and ask yourselves: is this really the football we want?" Molango was quoted as saying by AFP.
