A dramatic late crash stripped Oliver Solberg of the World Rally Championship (WRC) title. The young driver was closing in on the title on the final stage when, just two corners from the finish, he slid off the road at a sharp left-hander. His Toyota GR Yaris Rally1 crashed into thick bushes alongside the track, ending his world championship dreams in an instant.

It was an agonizing moment for both Oliver and his father, 2003 World Rally Champion Petter Solberg. Despite the immense disappointment, Petter's initial message on Instagram was filled with immense pride.

"Oliver was incredible. The fact that he fought for the world championship until the very last special stage of the final rally—in his first full WRC season—is simply astounding. His desire to win and his passion for the sport are even greater than mine ever were."

Speaking to Racer magazine, Petter Solberg revealed that their ability to remain positive despite the heartbreak comes down to his son's remarkable mental resilience.

"Oliver is mentally so strong. This generation grew up in a slightly different way. He isn't overshadowed by his father's achievements; he is focused on his own name and his own future. In his debut year, he had the drive to win and go toe-to-toe with Sébastien Ogier. It's been an incredible journey, and I'm still trying to take it all in," the rally legend commented.

In Sardinia, Oliver was so close to clinching the title that TV crews had already invited his family to the finish line to celebrate the potential new world champion.

"I was at the finish, but I walked down closer to the water to see the final sector. Oliver was leading by 1.9 seconds with only a few hundred meters to go. The title was in his hands. As he reached the corner by the beach, the road conditions changed slightly. Before the stage, they had raised the car by 25 millimeters, and it wasn't handling the same way. I was running toward the finish when I saw a massive cloud of dust to the left. I feared the worst. I started jumping up and down—not in celebration, but out of sheer frustration," Petter recalled.

It was a gut-wrenching moment for the family, with Petter recounting his son's first words right after the crash:

"He told me, \"I'm sorry, Dad. I wanted us to become the first father-and-son world champions, but I failed.\" I replied, \"You didn't fail! What you did was absolutely incredible.\""

Petter Solberg stressed that it was Oliver's brave, uncompromising driving that put him in championship contention in the first place. Although the season ended in bitter disappointment, the family has put the drama behind them and is already looking ahead to the next campaign.

"With everything learned this year, Oliver will head into next season with huge confidence. He has gained invaluable experience in terms of strategy, speed, and determination. I'm certain the other drivers are already fearing him," Solberg concluded.
