Nollywood’s ‘Mama G’, Patience Ozokwor shows a different side as she celebrates 68th birthday

For decades, Patience Ozokwor has made Nigerians sit up whenever she appears on screen.

Known affectionately as Mama G, the veteran Nollywood actress built a reputation for playing villainous, strong, and strict characters on TV and sometimes intimidating women. But a birthday video circulating online has given fans a very different glimpse of the actress.

Ozokwor turned 68 on Monday, September 14, 2026, and a video shared on X captured her smiling, dancing and enjoying a lively celebration surrounded by friends and well-wishers.

In the clip, the actress wore a long gown with colourful wrappers draped over her shoulders and dark sunglasses as she danced in the compound of a multi-storey house. She appears relaxed and cheerful as music plays and people around her clap, dance and record the celebration on their phones.

The video also captures the crowd singing “Happy birthday, happy birthday, we love you” to Ozokwor.

The celebration comes as the actress marks more than six decades of life and a career that has made her one of Nollywood’s most recognisable veterans.

Born on September 14, 1958, in Ngwo, Enugu State, Ozokwor studied Fine and Applied Arts at the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu. She began her career as a broadcaster with Radio Nigeria before moving into television and film.

Her breakthrough came after her appearance in the 1999 film Authority, and she went on to become particularly known for playing formidable mothers, mothers-in-law and other strong female characters.

Her work has earned her major industry recognition, including Best Supporting Actress wins at the Africa Movie Academy Awards in 2013. In 2023, she received the Industry Merit Award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards for her contribution to the Nigerian film industry.

Away from the birthday celebration, Ozokwor shared a message of gratitude on Instagram.

She thanked God for long life, good health and a sound mind, while also appreciating her supporters, whom she calls “MamaG Lovers”.

For an actress whose screen characters have often been associated with fear and authority, the birthday video offers a much softer picture of Mama G simply enjoying her day, surrounded by people celebrating her.
