Jayawardene's glittering Test career will come to an end after Sri Lanka's upcoming two-match series against Misbah's side, which begins in Galle on Wednesday.

Next week's Test will be Jayawardene's 148th, with the 37-year-old having racked up 11,671 runs at an average a shade over 50 since making his debut against India in August 1997.

While Misbah has nothing but admiration for Jayawardene's record, he has his sights firmly set on claiming a series victory on Sri Lankan soil.

"If we are to win the series in Sri Lanka, we have to ensure that their top batsmen, particularly Jayawardene, are not allowed to get many runs," the Pakistan skipper said.

"I have a lot of respect for what he has achieved, but we are going to Sri Lanka to win the two-Test series and we know how important it is for us to not allow their senior players to score."

Misbah is aware his side will need to be at their best to defeat Sri Lanka on their own patch.

"It is going to be a tough series because Sri Lanka have been playing a lot of Test and other cricket," he added.

"But we have prepared hard and I have confidence in our bowlers.

"Our spinners have traditionally done well in Sri Lanka but we are banking on our pace bowlers as well."
