Osi-Ekiti celebrates as king clocks 25 years on the throne

The Osi festival is an annual festival celebrated every November in Osi-Ekiti, Ekiti state.

The 2016 edition of the festival coincides with the 25th anniversary of the coronation of the Olosi of Osi Kingdom.

The celebration was a week-long event which came to a climax on Saturday and Sunday, November 5 and November 6, 2016. The king's birthday was also celebrated on Friday, November 4, 2016.

Indigenes of Osi Kingdom both far and wide came to celebrate the Osi festival and commemorate with the Olosi of Osi, HRM Oba Oladiran Agunbiade III.

The events leading to the celebration of Osi day started on Monday, October 31, 2016 with special prayers at St. Paul's Anglican Church, Osi Ekiti.

Tuesday, November 1, 2016 saw the students of the town celebrate with school quiz competition. Football and table tennis matches were held on Thursday, November 3, 2016 at the town field.

By Friday, November 4, 2016, the tempo had picked up and there was a youth carnival as well as Miss Osi beauty pageant which was held at the town hall.

Saturday, November 5, 2016 was the main Osi festival day. The event started with the National Anthem and opening prayers by a Christian Reverend and a Muslim Imam, showing the peaceful coexistence of the two religions in Osi.

The welcome address was delivered by O.P.U National President, Chief Kayode Eniola. The Ido/Osi Local Government Chairman also gave a short speech.

The Olosi of Osi himself gave an anniversary speech at the event. He began by thanking God for His blessings upon the town and another opportunity to celebrate Osi day peacefully.

He also expressed his gratitude to God for all that has been achieved so far during his reign. He further thanked the state government for recognising and appointing sons and daughters of Osi to certain posts over the years. The Oba appealed to the government to complete the road construction project which they had already started.

The monarch also thanked members of the community for their cooperation and encouraged them to continue to be peaceful and law abiding.

There was also an awards ceremony after which the chiefs, the oloris and the king danced.

Sunday, November 6, 2016 was the Thanksgiving ceremony which was held at St. Paul's Anglican Church, Osi Ekiti.

The monarch was joined by his children and grandchildren to celebrate and thank God for a successful reign so far. The reception was held at the town hall.

The celebration events were well attended by politicians and dignitaries such as Chief Head of service of Ekiti, the Ido/Osi Local Government Chairman, the Attorney General of Ekiti and the Commissioner for Justice of Ekiti.

Monarchs such as the King of Ikere, the king of Ekiti, and the king of Akure were also present.
