Oba Ogunwusi, who had previously undergone a seclusion period during which he was acquainted with the ethics of the crown of his forefathers, will formally be presented with his Staff of Office today.

Following weeks of preparation, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi will today Monday, 7th December be crowned as the 51st Ooni of Ife in a colourful coronation ceremony.

Oba Ogunwusi, who had previously undergone a seclusion period during which he was acquainted with the ethics of the throne of his forefathers, will formally be presented with his Staff of Office today.

So what exactly is the significance of the presentation of the Staff of Office?

Receiving the Staff of Office by the Ooni of Ife marks the formal assumption of office, and ascension to the throne by the monarch after weeks of seclusion where he must have been schooled on the ethics of the throne.

The crowning of the Ooni is however done by the King makers, who officially place the crown on the king's head.

Meanwhile on the heels of the coronation ceremony, today has been declared a public holiday in Ile Ife, even as about 1,000 security personnel have been deployed to provide adequate security at the event.

Expected to attend the Ooni's coronation ceremony are dignitaries from both within and outside Nigeria including President Muhammadu Buhari, his deputy, Yemi Osinbajo, and a rep of the Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth II.
