Olympiacos wants to 'snatch' Ojeleye! The Greeks see Peters' successor at Mali Kalemegdan, but Zvezda holds the keys
According to information obtained by Sportal, Semi Ojeleye is one of the names highly regarded by the Greek giants. The 31-year-old American-born basketball player, who has Nigerian roots, is currently under contract with Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet, which complicates the entire deal. For any concrete negotiations to begin, the Piraeus club must first reach an agreement with the management of the Belgrade red-and-whites.
Why is Ojeleye a perfect fit for Bartzokas?
Olympiacos coach Georgios Bartzokas has precisely defined the profile of the desired reinforcement: a physically powerful and athletically dominant basketball player who can seamlessly cover both the small forward and power forward positions. Such a profile brings much-needed speed, toughness, exceptional defensive versatility in switches, and diverse offensive options.
All indications suggest that the initial idea of acquiring a player who could also occasionally cover the center position has been set aside. The focus is now entirely on a player profile that can defensively lock down multiple positions, spread the opponent's defense with outside shooting, and perfectly complement Saša Vezenkov.
Semi Ojeleye possesses considerable EuroLeague experience – a non-negotiable factor for Bartzokas. He is a classic two-way player, capable of making a significant impact on both ends of the court, with a consistent and highly dangerous outside shot. The fact that he shoots 43% from three-point range in his EuroLeague career speaks volumes. He is characterized by outstanding athletic abilities, excellent off-ball movement, and intelligent cuts to the basket. In defensive assignments, he ranks among the league's elite, especially in switches, which perfectly aligns with the tactical vision of the European champions.
Zvezda holds all the cards
However, the realization of this transfer is a long shot, given that Ojeleye has a firm contract with Crvena Zvezda until the summer of 2027.
The option of Olympiacos paying the stipulated buyout clause and purchasing his contract is not unrealistic, considering the extreme scarcity of quality power forwards on the market.
It remains to be seen whether the management from Mali Kalemegdan will even be willing to sit down at the negotiating table and discuss selling one of their key players.
