The Ukrainian Association of Football (UAF) announced on Wednesday the dismissal of Sergiy Rebrov as national team coach. The decision comes after the national team, featuring Benfica players Trubin and Sudakov, failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Ukraine's World Cup journey ended with a 1-3 defeat to Sweden in the semi-final of the European play-off qualifiers.
Despite stepping down from the coaching role, the 51-year-old Rebrov will not entirely leave the federation's structure. The former forward, who expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him, will assume new responsibilities as vice-president and a member of the UAF executive committee.
In an official statement, federation president Andriy Shevchenko justified the change in direction. "We thank Sergiy Stanislavovych Rebrov for his work and his contribution to the development of young footballers. Today, we need to move forward and make new decisions that will form the basis of the future national team," the note read.
Sergiy Rebrov had been at the helm of the Ukrainian national team since 2023. Before taking on the role, the coach had stints with clubs such as Al Ain, Ferencváros, Al Ahli, and Dynamo Kyiv, where he notably excelled as a player.
