Manchester City has confirmed the signing of Argentine goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli from Marseille. The 34-year-old returns to the Etihad, penning a two-year deal. The shot-stopper was previously with the Citizens in 2016/17 but was loaned to Real Sociedad and never made an appearance for the English club.
According to BBC Sport, the transfer cost the English club close to two million euros. Rulli arrives to fill the void left by English goalkeeper James Trafford, who moved to Leeds in a deal potentially worth up to 52 million euros, and will serve as Gianluigi Donnarumma's backup.
In his first statements, Rulli expressed his excitement about returning. “This is a fantastic opportunity for me, one I had to seize. When the chance to sign for Manchester City comes along, you have to go for it,” the goalkeeper stated.
The Argentine international added: “Everyone knows what an impressive club this is. City’s sustained success has been remarkable. Everyone I spoke to about City told me I had to come here because it’s a club with incredibly high standards. Every professional wants to be in a high-performance environment, and I can’t wait to get started because I know I will improve and learn, which is always my main priority.”
With eight caps for Argentina, the goalkeeper was part of the squads that won the 2022 World Cup and the 2024 Copa América, also reaching the 2026 World Cup final. Throughout his career, he has also represented clubs such as Real Sociedad, Montpellier, and Ajax.
