It has been officially confirmed that Luka Dončić has been suspended for one game after accumulating his 16th technical foul in the match against Brooklyn. The NBA league announced the decision.
The Slovenian international will miss Monday's game against Washington. In addition to sitting out the game, Dončić will also forfeit approximately $264,000 from his contract.
This isn't Dončić's only issue, despite his stellar recent form. He remains on a probationary period for the rest of the season; should he receive two more technical fouls, he will face another one-game suspension, and the financial penalties will increase.
Initially, Dončić's 16th technical foul, issued after a verbal altercation with Goga Bitadze, was rescinded by the league following an appeal from the Lakers. However, a subsequent technical foul, incurred during the Brooklyn game when Dončić pushed Ziaire Williams, was upheld.
Why was Dončić assessed a technical foul?
The technical foul stemmed from an incident with Ziaire Williams in the third quarter.
Williams celebrated an offensive foul call excessively, getting in Luka's face, which prompted Dončić to push him.
The situation escalated when the Nets player then punched Dončić in the face, resulting in technical fouls for both players.
Luka in Superb Form
The Slovenian international has been playing in incredible form recently.
Over his last 12 games, he's averaged 39.7 points on 48.9% shooting from the field (39.3% from three-point range), along with 8.1 rebounds, 6.9 assists, and 2.5 steals per game. During this period, the Los Angeles Lakers have compiled an 11-1 record.
