Danish midfielder Morten Hjulmand has officially joined Atlético Madrid. The 27-year-old arrives from Sporting Lisbon, signing a five-year contract that will see him bolster the Rojiblancos' midfield through the 2026/27 campaign. The transfer materialized swiftly after other seemingly more probable options, such as João Gomes from Wolverhampton, fell through. At that time, Mateu Alemany secured two promising young talents in Rodrigo Mendoza and Obed Vargas.

However, negotiations for the Danish international accelerated in recent weeks, culminating in a €40 million transfer fee, as reported by "Marca." Hjulmand will reinforce an area where captain Koke was recently confirmed to be staying for another season. Barrios and Cardoso, who were plagued by injuries last season, complete the list of midfielders that coach Diego Simeone will rely on.

The move to Atlético Madrid marks a significant upward trajectory in Hjulmand's career. He broke into elite football with Austrian club Admira Wacker, then moved to Italian side Lecce, and subsequently to Sporting Lisbon – his last stop before the Metropolitano. The Danish international has long been a target for the Madrid club, with his name previously linked to a transfer to the Metropolitano. It wasn't until the summer of 2026, however, that sporting director Mateu Alemany managed to finalize the acquisition of the midfielder, who will now compete with Cardoso and Koke for a starting spot in the center of the park.
