Obradović is officially out: Zvezda bids farewell to coach and announces who will lead the team until the end of the season
Obradović's return to Mali Kalemegdan on October 11th last year was short-lived, as he departed just over seven months later.
His dismissal came after Partizan eliminated the Red and Whites in the ABA League semifinals.
Following the 0-2 series deficit, rumors of the coach's impending departure began circulating. Sportal confirmed the decision was final, and the club has now officially announced it.
KK Crvena zvezda Meridianbet informs the public that Saša Obradović is no longer the head coach of the senior team. The club thanks the former coach for his commitment and dedicated work during his tenure. The team will be led by our former coach Milan Tomić, whom the club thanks for accepting to take over the team at this moment and lead them through the final stages of the domestic championship. The club from Mali Kalemegdan is now searching for a new coach to lead the team next season.
And it seemed like things could have been better...
Immediately after taking over from Janis Sferopulos, he started achieving phenomenal results. He managed to turn around a disastrous start to the EuroLeague season, stringing together six consecutive victories in the elite competition (Tomislav Tomović, a temporary interim solution, had secured one win before him).
However, after that initial shock therapy yielded results, a decline followed, and the Red and Whites played with inconsistent rhythm for the rest of the season. There were incredible victories, but also painful defeats stemming from some of Obradović's decisions, which were met with disapproval from the Mali Kalemegdan faithful.
His stubbornness and refusal to deviate from certain established principles were often highlighted, and ultimately, it backfired. The chemistry between him and the players suddenly vanished, confidence plummeted, the team faltered in the EuroLeague play-in, and the final blow was the "sweep" by Partizan in the ABA League semifinal series, which ultimately sealed the coach's fate.
The second game was particularly critical, where Joan Peñarroya's team dismantled Zvezda in Pionir, securing their place in the final.
For the remainder of the season, Zvezda will have the opportunity to improve their impression with Tomić. A EuroLeague play-in appearance and immediate elimination, despite winning the Radivoj Korać Cup, is not enough considering the expectations. The Red and Whites will compete in the KLS Final Four, where they will vie for another trophy.
