Iran finished third in Group G after drawing 2-2 with New Zealand, 0-0 with Belgium, and 1-1 with Egypt. Without a single victory, they narrowly missed out on advancing to the knockout stage, failing to secure one of the eight best third-place spots.
The World Cup disappointment marked another setback for the 61-year-old Ghalenoei, following Iran's semi-final exit at the 2023 AFC Asian Cup after a loss to hosts Qatar. However, Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI) president Mehdi Taj confirmed that the coach would remain in his position. "Mr. Ghalenoei will continue as the head coach of the national team. We have already received his preparation plan for the Asian Cup," Taj told the Tehran Times.
The FFIRI president also announced that the national team would soon gather for a training camp ahead of the next FIFA international window. "The national team's training camp will begin shortly. We are also preparing several other updates regarding our national teams," Taj added.
