New York Knicks fans celebrated the team's first NBA Finals appearance since 1999 in fitting style, and the party's anthem couldn't have been more obvious. Moments after the Knicks clinched the Eastern Conference Finals series against the Cleveland Cavaliers, the DJ at Radio City Music Hall dropped Prince's "1999."
That year marked the last time the Knicks reached the NBA Finals. As fans sang along to "Tonight I'm gonna party like it's 1999," they could momentarily forget over a quarter-century of mostly lean years and revel in the current Knicks squad's record-breaking run, as reported by AP.
New York will now look to continue their successful streak against either the Oklahoma City Thunder or the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals. Fans seemed to have a clear preference for Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs, with chants of "We want Wemby! We want Wemby!" echoing through the city streets.
"This team is hungry and knows what a title would mean to this city. They're going to win the championship," said Knicks fan Anthony Mills at the celebration party following their Finals qualification.
