US cruise ship docks at Cuba for the first time in nearly 40 years
History was made yesterday, Monday May 2nd as a United States cruise ship docked at Cuba for the first time in 50 years.
The historic journey saw about 700 passengers on board The Adonia, a ship on Carnival Corp's Fathom cruise line.
According to CNN, the ship's arrival marks the first stop on a historic, seven-day voyage that signals closer ties between the United States and its communist-run neighbor.
According to a special report by CNN, large crowds waved to the boat from the shore as it approached Havana, while bands and dancers greeted passengers at the port.
The seven-day cruise is scheduled to stop in three cities: Havana, Cienfuegos and Santiago de Cuba.
Inspite of the progress recorded between United States and Cuba relations, the cruise reportedly almost didn't happen as last month, controversy erupted over a Cuban law that prevented Cuban-born passengers from coming to the island on boats.
The Cuban government however soon announced it would scrap its longstanding ban on letting people born in Cuba come to the island by cruise ship.
