Victor Wembanyama, the San Antonio Spurs' star player, invited his teammates to a horror movie screening in an effort to ease pressure and maintain focus ahead of the NBA Finals against the New York Knicks.
According to ESPN, the French player's initiative served to help the team decompress after their grueling and emotional 4-3 series victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder, secured last Saturday. Game 1 of the Finals is scheduled for this Thursday in Texas.
The chosen film was «Obsession», a horror thriller directed by Curry Barker. The title's selection appears to reflect Wembanyama's mindset on his journey toward a first championship ring, as well as the team's ambition to clinch the franchise's first title since 2014.
During a press conference on Tuesday, the French center emphasized the need to manage emotions. «Coming back down is a real challenge,» he stated. «This isn't over. We really need to come back down to Earth and understand that we haven't done the hardest part yet. The job is absolutely not finished.»
Wembanyama also assured that he is in good physical condition for the upcoming challenge, despite the immense effort expended in the previous series. «Indeed, it was a tough series, but, knock on wood, there are no injuries and I hope it stays that way,» he said, adding: «The realization that we were in the NBA Finals and that we had just won the conference finals, all of that hit me in five seconds, in the last five seconds of the fourth quarter of Game 7. So, it's also a huge challenge to manage all these emotions; it's massive.»
The San Antonio Spurs will host the first two games of the NBA Finals at the Frost Bank Center before the series shifts to New York for the subsequent two matchups.
