NBA Revolution: Worst Teams to Face Penalties Instead of Top Draft Picks!

The NBA leadership has made a radical move to curb "tanking," the practice of intentionally losing games.

According to renowned NBA insider Shams Charania of ESPN, the league's Board of Governors has near-unanimously adopted a new "3-2-1" rule, which will prevent teams from consistently being among the worst in the competition.

Previously, the rule stipulated that the league's worst teams had the highest chances of securing top draft picks. This led many to exploit the system, intentionally losing games once their playoff hopes faded. This rule has now been changed, and the poorest-performing teams will face penalties for a dismal season.

The new "3-2-1" system, named after the number of lottery balls allocated to teams, aims to incentivize winning and foster a competitive spirit. The number of teams participating in the draft lottery has expanded from 13 to 16. A significant new addition is the introduction of a "relegation zone," where the three teams with the worst records in the league will be penalized, receiving only two lottery balls each. This drastically reduces their chances of winning the top prize, the first overall pick.

Conversely, teams finishing from 4th to 10th place among those who miss the playoffs or play-in tournament will receive three lottery balls. Teams finishing 9th and 10th and securing a play-in spot will get two balls, while the losers of the 7th and 8th seed play-in games will receive one each. In addition to the adjusted percentages, a new rule prevents any team from securing the first overall pick in consecutive years or drafting within the top five positions for three seasons in a row.

The rule was approved with a 29-1 vote, with the Memphis Grizzlies being the sole dissenting franchise. This new regulation will take effect starting with the next draft and is set to remain in place until at least 2029.
