Don Nelson, the legendary NBA coach who ranks second all-time in career wins, has passed away at the age of 86.
The Golden State Warriors announced the news of the iconic coach's passing, with other teams he worked for subsequently confirming it.
As a player, Nelson secured five NBA championships with the Boston Celtics. In his coaching career, he achieved over 250 victories with three different franchises: the Milwaukee Bucks, Golden State Warriors, and Dallas Mavericks. He was named Coach of the Year three times and also had a successful tenure as a general manager.
During the 1970s, Nelson revolutionized the NBA by introducing a high-tempo, fast-paced style of play that diminished the traditional dominant role of centers.
Don Nelson concluded his coaching career in 2010 with 1,335 wins, having just surpassed Lenny Wilkens' record of 1,332 victories. He held the top spot for 12 years until March 2022, when he was overtaken by former San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich.
