Following the trade that sent Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat, we've seen several other interesting exchanges in the NBA. However, it seems we are on the verge of a trade that could shake up the entire league.
According to Shams Charania, Kawhi Leonard is close to returning to the Toronto Raptors, with Brandon Ingram and Gradey Dick expected to head in the opposite direction.
The Los Angeles Clippers are nearing a deal to send Kawhi Leonard to the Toronto Raptors for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two first-round picks, one pick swap, and two second-round picks, according to ESPN sources. - Shams Charania
This wouldn't be the first time Kawhi has worn a Raptors jersey. He played there during the 2018/19 season, when he successfully brought an NBA championship to the Canadian franchise.
His arrival would provide Darko Rajaković with a massive boost and an experienced team leader, something that was missing last season when the Raptors were eliminated by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round (4-3).
Leonard is a two-time NBA champion and a two-time Finals MVP. He also has seven All-Star appearances to his name.
LeBron James is leaving the Lakers
After months of speculation about whether LeBron James would continue his career or hang up his sneakers, Shams Charania and ESPN now report that the fate of one of the greatest players the game has ever seen is finally known. Yes, LeBron will play at age 42, but not for the Los Angeles Lakers.
Rich Paul, CEO of Klutch Sports and LeBron's long-time agent and associate, has officially confirmed the news. According to him, LeBron personally informed the Lakers' front office that he would not be returning to Los Angeles, and that they could comfortably plan their future without him.
Alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo's move to the Miami Heat, James's departure from the Lakers is certainly the biggest bombshell in the NBA this summer.
James wore the Lakers jersey for eight long years, during which he, along with Anthony Davis, managed to conquer the NBA once (2020).
Despite being well into his forties, "The King" still possesses immense quality, and a race for his signature is now expected. American media reports that Golden State is currently the frontrunner, but it's questionable how realistic that is, given that the Warriors have already exceeded the salary cap and can only offer him a "small" contract at this time.
There is also speculation that the Warriors plan to trade Jimmy Butler to Washington and bring in Anthony Davis in his place, thus reuniting the duo that brought the Lakers a title in 2020. In that scenario, Golden State would (once again) form a superteam, with Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, Anthony Davis, and LeBron James as its cornerstones.
How poetic it would be for Stephen Curry and LeBron James, two arch-rivals who fought so many battles while the King was still in Cleveland, to have their last dance in the same jersey...
Of course, this is all still in the realm of theory, and potential destinations for James also include the San Antonio Spurs, Miami Heat, and Cleveland Cavaliers.
Whatever happens, an interesting summer awaits us, there's no doubt about that. Both for James and for the Lakers, who must now find a new partner-in-crime for Luka Dončić.
