Spokesman for the 72 year-old’s family Bob Gunnell disclosed that Ali was hospitalised earlier in the week for treatment on a severe urinary tract infection. The hospital was not named.

"There were further issues with the earlier diagnosis of a urinary tract infection," Goddell said.

Ali celebrates his 73 birthday on Saturday, December 17 and the famous ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ boxer to spend it with family.

Ali has been battling with Parkinson's Disease since 1984, after he retired from the sport.
