The woman, who was said to be depressed due to the hardship in the country, reportedly took her children to the Enugu police station, stripped naked afterwards, and ran into a moving vehicle.

The eldest of the children, when asked about their father, said their father had been lost. She could not give any other information about their family, town or residential address.

Touched by the family’s story, Nkechinyere Mbah, the wife of Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, offered scholarship to the three children whose mother committed suicide by running into a moving vehicle.

While promising to support their daily needs and education, the Enugu First Lady announced that the scholarship would be undertaken through her foundation.

According to Mbah, the sponsorship of the children’s education would be from nursery school to university level. She also directed the immediate relocation of the children from Ogui Police Station to a home, where the state government would take care of them.

Addressing reporters, Mbah appealed to people who are depressed to seek help and go for counselling to avoid taking drastic decisions.

She also urged the Commissioner for the Ministry of Children, Gender and Social Development, Ngozi Enih, to intensify sensitisation and counselling of people, especially depressed persons to help them come out of the situation.

The woman’s suicide death comes as Nigerians have been experiencing unprecedented hardship following the recent economic policies, which have drastically pushed up the rate of inflation and prices of goods and services.
