Monaco's woes continue. After being relegated from the EuroLeague to the EuroCup, the financial control committee of French basketball has rejected the Principality club's application to compete in the domestic league for the 2026/27 season. The stated reasons are serious financial problems and a lack of guarantees that the club can operate normally. Monaco immediately filed an appeal, with a final decision expected on July 20th.
Monaco's financial troubles began midway through last season when club president Aleksey Fedorychev had part of his assets frozen due to sanctions related to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. As he was the club's primary and direct financier, Monaco lost its main source of income, forcing the state to step in and cover debts until the end of the season.
According to French media reports, the Principality's authorities now plan to cut off funding until Fedorychev sells the club. "Nice Matin" suggests the Russian businessman could lose ownership as his shares were pledged as collateral.
Speculation is rife that former NBA player Jamal Mashburn is interested in taking over the club, with Steven Schuler, CEO of "Enerjen Capital" and "European Maritime Finance," also entering the race.
French league president Philippe Ausseur stated there would be no exceptions for Monaco, emphasizing they must adhere to financial regulations. Failure to do so would most likely lead to the club's dissolution.
It appears the path from winning a championship (yes, Monaco is the reigning French champion) to potential collapse is shorter than it seems.
