Mike Perry inflicted significant damage, bloodying Nate Diaz over two rounds before the fight was stopped due to several gruesome cuts on the veteran's face.
From the outset, Perry hunted for the knockout, landing powerful punches, elbows, and knees. A final knee strike dropped Diaz to the canvas at the end of the second round, and as he returned to his corner, the blood streaming down his face told the true story of the bout. Despite his team's efforts, blood was getting into Diaz's eyes, making it impossible for him to continue. His corner made the decision to stop the fight to prevent more serious injury.
“Look, I landed some really good shots and I was connecting,” Perry stated after what might be the biggest win of his career. “I started to get a little tired, but that’s part of the game. He’s the toughest motherf***er. Super tough. We got the job done. I’m grateful to be here. Blood was shed.”
A brief grappling exchange followed, with Diaz attempting a submission, but Perry escaped, and they returned to their feet. Perry then attacked with a brutal body shot, maintaining the pressure, and the toll of the early exchanges was already visible on Diaz.
However, the Californian then woke up, starting to land straight punches in several consecutive combinations. At the beginning of the second round, Perry swung with heavy, powerful strikes, while Diaz countered with the same straight crosses that found their mark every time. Perry appeared to have hurt Diaz with a flurry of punches, but the younger Diaz brother simply absorbed the damage and immediately fired back.
“He did everything I expected him to do,” Diaz said of Perry. “I think I broke my finger in the first few seconds. I’ll be back and I’ll kick his f***ing ass. Nobody beats me twice, motherf***er. I had blood in my eyes. The stoppage is okay.”
This was a tremendous victory for Perry upon his return to MMA, and now all sorts of opportunities lie ahead. He could clearly remain in mixed martial arts or return to bare-knuckle boxing, where a potential clash with Darren Till in BKFC awaits. Whatever he decides, he has plenty of reasons to celebrate after his latest win on Saturday.
